Bringing hope to a young generation
Success for Yr 5 Boys!
Completing the CHILLAX program this term for Year 5 students, which focusses on wellbeing and growth in particular students who are highly active and struggle with being still and focussing in class. Significant outcomes have been identified from this group of young people. For example, during their Grounding and Chillaxercise short tasks students showed remarkable improvement in the ability to focus, relax and be still (for short periods of time). They also learnt tools and skills around emotional regulation. When they flew their reward gliders in the last session (as representation of flying into their dreams) their pride and self-belief was evident!
As a part of this program, class teachers were asked to provide any positive feedback on student’s progress to encourage their efforts for change. This made a significant difference. Examples of this are:-
-
Student arriving early to school and ready to learn, displaying a positive attitude;
-
Ability to express concerns to teacher rather than running out of the classroom;
-
More confidence with maths, including measuring angles;
-
Improved keyboard skills;
-
Using juicy words and awesome sentences in english this week;
-
Using a dictionary to check spelling;
-
Being respectful in class and friendly to others;
-
Received an A on an assessment;
-
Being friendly is a strength of this students;
-
Improvement with problem solving and creativity.
Girls Discovering their Purpose.
Girls with Purpose – is an 8 wk program for yr 6 girls running throughout the term. This program is an interactive discussion-based workshop which aims to highlight some important topics such as self-confidence, healthy friendships, courage and emotional growth, respect for self and others and physical wellbeing.
Girls participating in this group often struggle with big issues such as bullying, being lonely with no friends and anxiety. Through activities and conversation, the girls learn to express their thoughts, listen to others and learn in a safe and fun environment. Chappy is always there to provide a positive role model and answer difficult questions with respect.
On completion of the program, students note that they’re more likely to deal with conflict in a healthy way, reach out for help when they need it and look ahead to high school with hope and a sense of excitement.
Class teachers of these students and their parents are pleased to see positive outcomes, highlighting positive changes, and that they see an attitude of 'peace' these young ladies carry with them!
Testimonials...
“The school chaplains who are out there working for you and your community are doing a much tougher job than I ever had to do. We need school chaplains. They are the ‘frontline’ people who are making the difference in our young generation.”
